My name is Debbie, I am a retired Midwife with 14 years of experience. I have had to reassess my own career after suffering for more than 3 years with Long Covid which has fundamentally altered my ability to practice as a Midwife in the way I had been, with long unsocial hours, few if any breaks and exhausting shift patterns.
I have a significant trauma history, including childhood sexual abuse and repeated sexual assaults throughout my formative years and adolescence. I have accessed multiple talking therapies which I don’t discount, they had their place and offered benefit and insight. They did not fundamentally address the trauma that was stored in my body and affecting my reactions and emotions without my knowledge. I had a core belief that I had been fundamentally altered, that something within me was irrevocably broken by what had happened to me.
I was wrong, it was possible for me to recover, the body has the ability to process these events fully.TRE took me on a journey of recovery that I could not have anticipated or comprehended was possible.
I found Trauma/Tension Release Exercises at a time in my life when, on the surface I had lost everything – my health, my career, any control or certainty about the future. TRE was profound and life changing and allowed me to deeply release stored tension and trauma in my body leading to release of physical tension and pain and profoundly reducing my reactivity (irritation, anger, anxiety) allowing my nervous system to return to a calm and connected state. I think that Long Covid was a call from my body to be heard and felt, one that I am deeply grateful for as it has allowed me to come home to my body in a way I could not have imagined was even possible.
